A Daily Dose of Art: Mad Men

During a conversation with a friend, she mentioned how much she loves Mad Men, and I decided to start watching it again. I watched the first episode this morning.

Who wants to talk about that moment in the meeting with the Lucky Strike folks when Don Draper has his “a-ha moment” and then talks about the point of advertising is to make people feel happy, to let people know that whatever they’re doing, they’re going to be okay, that they are okay? So good.

Here’s a great essay on re-watching Mad Men, Why Mad Men Is the Show You Should Always Be Re-Watching” by Alex Pappademus

I’m not here to talk to you about problematic antiheroes and I'm not here to reopen the case of Don Draper; either he lives in your heart or he doesn’t. But every time I dip back into the show that's ostensibly his life story, the whole project seems deeper, sadder and funnier—and a different supporting character emerges as an MVP. Last go-round, I became convinced Pete Campbell was one of the great protagonists in all of American fiction; the time before that, it was Peggy. The characters don’t change, of course, but I do; I get older, and they live out the same ten years over and over, their historically tumultuous lives becoming a fixed point in my own turbulent life.”

Below is a video of Mad Men’s opening credits, which may or may not make you want to re-watch the show.
