Daily Doses of Art for June 2026

Below is a running list of some of my Daily Doses of Art for June 2026.

I skipped keeping track of my daily doses of art for several weeks because life came at me fast. I did not stop putting myself in the way of art during April and May. I still enjoyed a ton of music, literature, visual art, and more. You just don’t get to see what any of it was. Which is fine. It’s all good.

Here’s the list for (most of) April 2026.

Here’s the list for March 2026.

Here’s the list for February 2026.

And here’s the list for January 2026.

And here’s everything I’ve recorded since I launched this public accounting of artful encounters.

Keeping track of my doses of art is a lovely daily practice (when I do it!) that helps me review or anticipate my day and choose one art encounter to share here. I usually have multiple art encounters each day, but it’s simpler to include one.

June 1: I started reading Life and Artby Richard Russo, and I like it!

June 2: During the first Spiritual Direction for Writers® Summer Intensive Zoom gathering tonight we did visio divina with this fantastic painting by Bill Killebrew. Love.

June 3: I started reading Brawlerby Lauren Groff and I like it!

June 4: Thanks to today’s SDW Daily Nourishment, I read the poem “Granddaughters” by Joy Harjo.

June 5: Thanks to today’s SDW Daily Nourishment I read the poem “Ars Poetica” by Rita Dove.

June 6: I listened toThe Beatles while running a few errands. Always and forever.

June 7: I started reading Lost and Found in the Cathedral of Cinema: A Spiritual Journey by Jeffrey Overstreet (More on this soon!)

June 8: The playlist at the gym got thrown off and played Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” and it was great to hear that song for the first time in a long time even though it didn’t do much for my bench press situation from a hype/energy standpoint. That’s such a great song.

June 9: I read more from Lost and Found in the Cathedral of Cinema: A Spiritual Journey.

June 14: (I hope to fill in these blank spaces soon, but I might not! I put myself in the way of art, but didn’t take the time to document it… I want to go back and piece things together because I like keeping a record of it all. We’ll see!)

June 20: I attended a lovely program at one of our public library locations that honored the mother of my friend Bettina Byrd-Giles. Her mother, Patricia Weaver Byrd, was a gospel singer in Birmingham for a few decades. We enjoyed stories and musical performances by local singers and musicians. It was really fantastic.

June 21: I finally read We Tell Ourselves Stories by Alissa Wilkinson. The hardback came out last year while I was still trying to finish up the manuscript for Spiritual Direction for Writers: Everyday Rituals for Your Writing Life.I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves Joan Didion, Hollywood, great writing, and thinking about why we tell ourselves stories that may or may not be true.

June 22: I watched the documentary Out of the Picture. (I love documentaries like this, even when they’re pointing out changes that have occurred that are bad for us all.)

June 26: I flew to New York to visit my daughter who’s in town for a summer internship and went to the NYPL for a few hours to do some research. I looked at a few Joan Mitchell books full of art and stories and whatnot.

June 27: I wandered around this gallery looking at all of these paintings by Helen Frankenthalerand was in heaven.

June 28: I sat with today’s Spiritual Direction for Writers® Daily Nourishment offering for a good long while. Love the poem and the art. All of it.
