A Daily Dose of Art: Through the Camera Lens of Danny Lyon
I’m in Durham for the DITA Conference at Duke University. During our lunch break, a friend and I took some time to view an exhibition in the university library featuring photographs by Danny Lyon.
“Movement and Memory: Through the Camera Lens of Danny Lyon” shows several photos from the 1960s by Lyon, who was a college student at the time. He hitchhiked from Chicago to Cairo, Illinois, to document segregation and join the Civil Rights Movement. He was hired to serve as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and traveled to various cities across the South to capture images of the conditions and events unfolding.
“He made evidence of organizing, protesting, rest, grief, and celebration, all equally deliberate actions towards an investment in an imagined future.”
